This is a new piece I've done this week for self promotion. It is always good to use your free time to do this kind of work. You learn different things and you keep yourself active and ready to work.
I usually like to do images that will give me a headache to finish, that means having to paint big landscapes or many characters. You always start drawing a sketch freely and then, once you have something you like, you get like..."now, do I really have to finish this piece? Ok, so there we go..."
This is the sketch stage. As you can see there's not a ton of information, as it should be. At this stage the main goal is to get a nice composition and good shapes. I've lost my line art in the process, so I won't be able to show it here. I used Painter X3 for this. The pencil tool in Painter is tops, it works great with inclination, just as if you were holding a real pencil.
This is the colored version in painter. I used Digital Watercolor for the sky and Wet Oil Brush for all the rest. No effects, no adjestment layers, just plain and simple painting. I separated the image in three layers: foreground, background and sky. I tried to keep the foregound cool and the background warm. I finally put a layer on top of all and with a 2b pencil tool I painted on some parts of the image to delete line where I found necessary.
After that I opened the image in Photoshop and made some tonal and contrast corrections, I also added some clouds to help give a bettter sense of depth and perspective.
